In the year 1758 a 15-year-old girl by the name of Mary Jemison was taken captive by a Shawnee Indian and a French raiding party that had attacked her farm. Jemison was adopted into the Shawnee tribe and soon became close to two Seneca sisters. When given the opportunity to return to her colonial home, she refused, finding that she had come to love the Indian society, and the life she had with them. Mary Rowlandson a Puritan living in Lancaster, Massachusetts had a far different experience haven been taken captive by the Indians. Rowlandson was married to husband Joseph and she was the mother of three children before being taken captive by the Indians. Mary lost her sister and close family and friends in the attack on their village. Later Roland's youngest child died as a result of an injury sustained during the attack. These two women had very different interpretations of the Indians and different experiences of the treatment showed it to them. Rowlandson’s view of the Indians that captured her is they are Barbaric creatures. These people burned and destroyed homes were abusive to people and killed the ones that she loved. As a Puritan, she saw these people of the wilderness and their way of life as hellish and unnatural. Jemison on the other hand loved the lifestyle she had with the Indians, she even married and had children with a Seneca man. Another, similarity between the two is that during their time in captivity they both found ways to keep themselves occupied, Mary Rowlandson was a seamstress so to say, many different Indians came to her and beat her to make clothing for them, Mary Jemison sat on many councils and advisory boards.
