In an excerpt from “The Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson,” Mary uses religious language in multiple instances during her captivity by Native Americans to give herself strength to carry on. In the beginning of her book her village is under attack and the Natives are killing off the people in the village, including the family nearest to her. When the attack is coming to an end Mary says, “Yet the Lord by His almighty power preserved a number of us from death, for there were twenty-four of us taken alive and carried captive” (Rowlandson). Mary was one of those twenty-four whose life was spared and she gives credit to God for saving her. This is the beginning of a long journey for Mary and one of the first times
