She died on-February 1919, in oswego, new york. career path-surgery Mary E Walker graduated from syracuse medical college and, while serving as an deputy surgeon during the Civil War, she was captured by the confederate army. And was awarded with the medal of honor for her service and went on lecturing about women's rights.Dress reform and suffrage. Mary was seeking to change the restrict of women styles back in her day, And refusing to be held back by her gender.
Mary was the first women ever to be awarded with the medal of honor.

She refused to return it, however always wore the medal. president jimmy carter restored the award to Mary in 1977. as a result to her service to the union during the civil war, Mary walker was awarded with $766.16.
One fact about Mary Walker she wore mens clothing also including top hats,and was arrested on several occasions for impersonating a man. And also mary wanted to become a doctor so she saved her money from being a teacher, then Mary enrolled in the college syracuse medical college,at the age of 21 she graduated in june 1855. she also was the only woman in her class and the second female to become a doctor in the nation. When the civil war broke out, she immediately volunteered her service to the union army.She was commission as a medical officer,but, volunteered anyway as a nurse, the army had no female surgeons.
