Mary Warren was Abigail’s puppet, salvation and down fall throughout the entirety of the play. The Crucible begins with a group of girl dancing around in the middle of the forest. They surround a cauldron bubbling over a fire. Parris wanders into the woods, sees the girls dancing, and immediately assumes that they are partaking in witchcraft. When the girls all meet again, this time in the town, Abigail says that if they say anything that gets her in trouble she will kill them. Mary Warren is one of the threatened girls and from now on they are all in the palm of Abigail's hand. Mary Warren begins her life as one of Abigail’s puppets when Abigail claims that they were in fact practicing witchcraft and are now cured. The girls are forced follow along with it and when Reverend Hale asks if they saw anyone else with the devil Abigail replies with “Goody Proctor”. This causes all of the …show more content…
They see John admitting such a crime as a desperate attempt to fool the court and decide to bring Elizabeth out and ask her why she fired Abigail. Elizabeth lies and says that Abigail just “displeased” her in order to try to save her husband. This instead causes the court to not believe anything he has said. Abigail gets the court to not believe anything Mary said when her and the other girls brand her as a witch. This causes Mary to get scared and lie saying that John is the witch and is making her untruthful in order to try to free his wife. This is where Mary becomes Abigail’s down fall. Abigail’s plan crumbles when the court homogeneously claims John as a witch. John knows that he will be killed unless he “confesses” to witchcraft. He does so verbally but when the court requires him to sign a document stating this he refuses. “They think to go like saints.
