Mary Whiton Calkins, born in 1863, was one of the most influential psychologists of her time. She was the fFirst born to Wolcott and Charlotte Whitton Calkins in Hartford, Connecticut but spent most of her childhood in Buffalo, NY until the family relocated to Newton, Massachusetts in 1880 when she was 17 years olds due to her father’s job relocation. Once moved to Newton, Mary’s father ensured that she received an education. She attended Smiths college from which she graduated with a concentration in Classics and philosophy in the year 1885. After graduation Mary and her family took an 18-month tour of Europe where she spent most of her time traveling and studying Modern Greek Classics. Upon their return to the United states in 1887, Mr.
