Document 1: “Mary Wollstonecraft criticizes Rousseau’s View of Women”
• What criticisms does Wollstonecraft direct against Rousseau’s views?
Wollstonecraft had many criticism towards Rousseau’s views mainly putting emphasis on education. She also criticized Rousseau for stating that women were slaves to men, women being obedient and doing everything they were told, and that just in general women were not less than men but equal, in case making a point to make education equal for that matter.
• Why does Wollstonecraft emphasize a new kind of education for women?
She felt it was a benefit to society as a whole, for example having women not being able to depend solely on men and be able to make it on their own. Also help society prosper. Finally, by setting an example to their offspring to be educated as well.

These women explain their need to hold a job to simply support themselves as they have no other means by in which they can do that anymore and manufacturing jobs were mainly some of the only ones that hired women.
• What changes in production methods have led women from the home to the factory?
The changes in production methods that led women from the home to the factory was the decreased in farming forcing women to look for employment in factories.

• How does the situation of these women relate to the possibility of their marrying?
At the time most women married so that they could leave their house and be supported by their husband. Due to these women’s situation it was most likely that they would not be seeking or needing marriage due to their independence from working manufacturing jobs. These made it harder for women to combine domestic duties with work.
