A mask is an apparatus that covers the face in order to frighten or entertain others. In the novel the Lord of the Flies, the author William Golding uses the mask to disguise, camouflage/hide and most importantly free the boys from shame and consciousness allowing the boys to lose their sense of civilization. In this essay I will analyze Golding uses the mask in chapter four, agreeingly entitled “Painted Faces and Long Hair” .
