Elton Mayo (1880 – 1949) - Better communication, Greater manager involvement and Working in groups or teams

Better communication between managers and workers (Hawthorne workers were consulted over the experiments and also had the opportunity to give feedback)
Greater manager involvement in employees working lives (Hawthorne workers responded to the increased level of attention they were receiving)

He believed that workers are not just concerned with money but they will work better when their social needs have been met, while at work as well as better wages. Mayo concluded that the research he did showed him; workers are motivated by better communication between managers and workers. This theory would fit in with a paternalistic (meaning) style of management.

Abraham Maslow (1908 – 1970) - Psychological needs of employees

Maslow theory talks more about the physiological need of employees also the basic needs for employee. He said that they are five levels of human needs which also need the employees to have fulfilled at work. As you can see in the diagram above it shows the five levels of needs.

These theories they relate to the hospitality industry because they include good team work. It is very important to have good communication within the company because good communication means that your workers are more likely to perform the task properly and enjoy/feel comfortable while being at work. On the other hand Maslow goes on to say that not all workers are motivated the same way they are all motivated differently and according to their internal needs, skills, experience and qualification.
