Materialism and greed left unchecked is dangerous. In the novella, The Pearl by John Steinbeck. A fisherman named Kino finds the Pearl of the World-The biggest pearl anyone has seen on the island. In the story everyone wants the pearl. They become greedy.The author shows how materialism is bad and dangerous through his characters: Kino’s attackers, the doctor and Kino himself.

To begin with, people get so greedy they attack Kino for the pearl, but not all physically. The first time this happened is shown through this quote from the book, “He felt cloth struck at it with his knife and missed and struck again and felt the knife go through cloth and then his head crashed with lightning and exploded with pain”. We assumed that this was the doctor’s assistant through context clues from closer to the beginning of the book. A mental attack happened when Kino was selling his pearl, he walked in set his pearl on the tray and let the pearl buyer examine the pearl. The buyer looks at it and says it’s like fools gold. He said it’s worthless. Another attack happened when Kino is on the beach. “He heard the rush got his knife out at one dark figure and felt his knife go home, and then he was swept to his knees and swept again to the ground. He says, “Has he any money?” (6)Knowing that Kino has no money then he acts like he has another patient. Sounds suspicious. Kino shouldn’t go to the doctor anyway. “Sometimes my friend, the scorpion sting has a curious effect. There will be apparent improvement, and then without a warning-pouf!”( ) This is the doctor lying to Kino about the sting. Kino shouldn’t have let the doctor in. The doctor is so greedy he gives the baby a pill to poison it to make it to where he has to cure him which will mean he has to get payed. This doctor isn’t very nice.
