“I’m sorry Mattie”, he panted. I’m leaving you alone” (Anderson 146). The author of this inspiring novel is Laurie Halse Anderson. The one specific character that I will be analyzing for this writing piece is Matilda or as most people call her, Mattie Cook. A moment that I thought that she was faced with challenging adversity was when she didn’t have someone to look out for her anymore. The way my character responded really showed a great amount of growth. Lucille Cook, Matilda’s mother getting diagnosed or consuming the fever changed everything. Mrs. Cook getting ill caused Matilda to bolt away from Philadelphia with her Grandfather to avoid any possibilities of absorbing yellow fever as well as many other guiltless people in the city. Later on in the story Matilda and her Grandfather hear some footsteps roaming around the coffeehouse. Matilda also did not give up on helping her mother and her grandfather when they were unhealthy with the disease. “Don’t move, I’ll help you. I grabbed my bedding and made a pillow for his head” (Anderson 146). Matilda also nurtured Nell, an orphan that she found in the scary streets of Philadelphia. Mattie protected and cared for Nell a lot. “She trusted me to do what was right for her” (Anderson 185). “Nell stooped to pick up a daisy on the sidewalk. She held it up to me with a smile, and I tucked it into her hair” (Anderson 187). Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson also taught me to not give up and try your hardest on everything.
