In her short story “The Other Paris,” author Mavis Gallant describes the sudden marriage of Carol and Howard Mitchell. Carol dreams of a romantic proposal, but approaches her marriage to Howard as if it is simply as task that needs to be completed. Howard, on the other hand, is persuaded that he must be married before he is too old. Gallant uses the characterization of Carol and Howard along with irony and ridicule illustrate how society expects these two to be married, forcing them both into a loveless marriage that they both settle. The passage begins with Carol describing her idea of a typical marriage proposal, which involves “all at once the Seine,moonlight, barrows of violets, acacias in flower...” (4-5).
