Project Summary:
Maya Archaeologist have reported ritual centers at various sites throughout the southern lowlands of Mesoamerica. Designating these structures as ritual centers is based on the understanding that architectural forms/contents can imply function; further, these functions can reflect cultural practices (Chase and Chase, 1998). Tikal, specifically the North Acropolis of the site, is described as one of these ritual centers. Previous excavations have revealed caches in a patterned that indicate a symbolic “center”. All of the caches contained faunal remains, specifically articulated crocodiles, which are central to the Maya worldview. These caches are located on the northern side of the plaza Str. 5D-22 (Ca. 140), western side
