We have one dominating male character named Jabu. He is the protagonist and assumes the most responsibility as the narrative revolves around his life. He plays an authoritative role in this film as he is the leader of his community and is meant to lead his followers down a path of righteousness, or so they believe as they look up to him as a sort of God due to his spiritual powers, but he encourages his people to see the God within themselves. “Gender prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are.” (Boas 2013) The simple fact that he is a male and the protagonist takes away from Evelyn being the guide and the sole reason he is able to find his purpose.
In our term project we have a character named Evelyn who is the oracle, she plays a supporting role in the film, but her role is equally as important as the protagonist’s role. In this instance, Evelyn supports Jabu and is seen as the other, but her significance to the film is a lot more meaningful than Jabus.
