Mean To Be Well-Educated

Alfie Kohn is very brave for critiquing the education system in “What Does It Mean to be Well-Educated?” and he is indeed very smart in doing so. He mentions many aspects of the schooling system and many of them are unfortunately very true. There are 6 main ideas in this article and I agree very strongly with many of them. Firstly, point 1 describes the purpose of education. Kohn wonders why we always refer to how educated someone is rather than why we even go to school. Which school is the right one? There are so many rich, elite schools, however it doesn’t necessarily mean those that go there are well-educated, according to the norm. So what does it mean to be well-educated? No one really knows what it means, it means something different to every single person. To one person it could mean to get a good job that pays well, and to another it could mean they have the ability to love themselves. In my opinion I did not fit their definition because, yes I did well in school, however once I hit the outdoors, I knew nothing. I did have book smarts; however street smarts did not belong to me. “High scores on standardized tests signify a facility with taking standardized tests.” I was able to perform well on these tests because it defines my way of working, but that means nothing in terms of my education. I’m able to memorize quickly, but that won’t help me very much in life. Although there are flaws, I do believe every school does teach fundamentals of living to every student.
