Final Report
A college campus is a prime example of a good place to spread disease. In our first unit we saw diseases that were transmitted among many of the students with ease. There were several different tests and precautionary measures that can be taken to prevent the spread of disease and also in some cases there are tests that can be taken ahead of time to help prevent disease.
In lesson 1.1 we were introduced to the majority of the patients. The first group we were introduced to was the meningitis group. This group included Sue, Jill, Maria, and Marco. Sue acquired the disease from being on her college campus. Sue was a very involved student on campus and interacted with a lot of different people on a day to day basis. Since she was on a college campus, it made it a lot harder for her to be particularly sanitary at all times. Sue started off with being extremely tired and having a constant headache which prevented her from getting a decent amount of sleep. Also when Sue came into the doctor’s office she had a fever of 100.6. Sue’s DNA information was sent to the lab and that is how it was concludedthat she had meningitis. Her DNA strands seemed to match that of the disease Neisseria Meningitides and that is how I found out that this is the disease that she had. It was not hard to determine that Jill had contracted meningitis as well. Jill and Sue were both roommates and teammates so they spent a lot of time together. It was easy to assume that the two of them shared a lot of things like drinks and food because of how much time they spent together. Based off the amount of time they spent together and the fact that they were pretty much showing all of the same symptoms it was clear that Jill also had the disease. Although Maria was not roommates with Jill and Sue, she spent the majority of her time in their dorm room. Based on the amount of time Maria spent in the room with Jill and Sue it can be determined that she also had meningitis. Marco was very easy to figure out. Marco was Sue’s lab partner so clearly they spent a lot of time together in class. They were also probably very close because during labs you do a lot of interaction with your partner.
Meningitis was not the only disease floating around the campus. There was definitely something else. Patients had showed symptoms of a sore throat, achy muscles, dry cough, and also a consistently high temperature. There were two males that showed all of these symptoms. They were Anthony and Arnie. It was a bit difficult to determine what disease these two had because of the little information of them. I had to do a lot of research on just their symptoms. Based on all of their symptoms the top disease that came up was Influenza B which is also known as the flu. This is a very common disease that goes around during certain parts of the year. One of the resource sheets mentioned the fact that Anthony ran around campus a lot and was a reporter which means that he was exposed to a great deal of germs all the time. He had been helping Arnie prepare some of his pictures so it was easy for me to determine that Arnie also had Influenza B.
Wanda and Alvin both had the same disease but I needed to figure out what the disease was. One of the resource sheets provided the DNA strand for Wanda. With this information given, I was able to go on the BLAST database and input Wanda’s information. After the information was submitted, it showed that she was
