Partially through technology, we are allowing the media to dictate the way we should live, act and present ourselves. Many Canadians hate to let society control them, but most do not reject the insidious pressure to do so as well as the Amish. The way that people are dressing is strongly dictated by the media and society’s expectations for us. For example, women are told that they are nothing if not sexy, slim and wear skimpy clothing. In the Amish community, the women and girls wear old-fashioned dresses made from solid-coloured fabrics with a long skirt and sleeves.
