As technology advances so do the sciences. Biology, Chemistry and the other sciences advance through new technologies such as centrifuges, hotplates, electronic scales, and advance microscopes. However, do the social sciences advance in the same way? To answer this question I shall focus on medical advances and psychology.
One such medical advancement is brain scans. MRI and CAT scans can show if the patient has a brain tumor. If said patient has a brain tumor the patient now has the option of having the tumor removed through surgery or getting treatment through medication. Another helpful medical advancement is blood testing of melatonin and serotonin levels. This blood test checks a patients levels of serotonin and melatonin to see if they …show more content…
If a person is experiencing erratic behavior and goes to a psychologist, the psychologist can recommend that the client has a brain scan. After the results from the scan are developed the client can find out if there is a tumor or other abnormality in the brain. If there is a tumor the client can get treatment that has been mentioned in the paragraph prior. However, even if there is no tumor the client can go back to the psychologist for treatment such as therapy which might lead to a diagnosis of a mental illness. The patient once diagnosed as mental ill could then receive medication to help balance out his or her emotions. If the patient is a threat to society or to him or herself, the patient might be hospitalized so that they can get the medication and therapy that is needed and be kept in a controlled environment. Even if the patient is not diagnosed as mentally ill his or her psychologist might recommend that the patient have a blood test conducted to test their level of serotonin and melatonin. This is because serotonin and melatonin affect a person’s mood and behavior. If the patient’s serotonin and melatonin level are not within the acceptable ranges then simple medication will get them back to acting normal.
