Interpersonal skills are the life skills we use every day to communicate with other people both individually and in groups. Individuals that have worked on developing strong interpersonal skills are usually more successful in both their personal and professional lives. Medical assistants must demonstrate interpersonal skills and awareness when dealing with patients. Being mindful when meeting someone for the first time, respecting individual’s cultures and beliefs. As well as, taking into consideration communication barriers when they arise. “You can be the difference between a good experience and a poor one.” First impression skills used by medical assistants are very important. Being mindful of facial expressions, and tone of voice when interacting with others. Body language makes up 60% of all non-verbal communication, using welcoming body language is critical. A medical assistant with strong interpersonal skills will smile and make eye contact with patients. Always shows an interest in the people you talk to. There are many different reasons a communication barrier can arise while working as a medical assistant. Physical impairments, language barriers, prejudices, stereotyping, and perceptions can all be communication barriers. When caring for these patients a medical assistant should always talk to the patient, rather than the person caring for and/or interpreting for the individual. If you are meeting with a patient that doesn’t speak English, pay close attention to body language of the patient. Use simple direct statements that are easy to translate, to ensure the patient has a clear understanding of the topic at
