Gender Differences in the Medical Profession

When people think of a doctor or of world political leaders, people think of a man. Most people see these positions as being held by men. Since gender matters in medical careers, workers need to be concerned with multiple aspects of work. In today’s world, women are taking a more active role in the medical career they have chosen. Women were not able to be in the medical profession in the early 1900s, but as time went on women have had more and more chances to choose what career they would like go into. Gender affects the way a doctor is paid. Female pay is always fifty to seventy-five percent lower than males pay in the healthcare profession (William, Peceno, and Blair-Loy). Overall, working women earn eighty one percent of what male coworkers earn, but in the medical field the earnings are less (William, Peceno, and Blair-Loy). Women physicians and surgeons make seventy-nine percent of what male colleagues earn (William, Peceno, and Blair-Loy). In 2011, women’s annual median earnings were $21,216 less than men’s earnings (William, Peceno, and Blair-Loy). The income disparity between men and women physicians remains even when controlling for age, specialty, and hours worked (William, Peceno, and Blair-Loy). Severson said, “Female orthopedic surgeons’ average earnings are only $240,000 a year; while male orthopedic surgeons earn at least $324,000 a year.” Women and men should receive pay by degree not gender. Females and males should be treated the same at a workplace. If the job is gender-related then receiving pay for a gender is right. Females should not be looked down upon and receive less pay because of gender differences. Gender inequality still exists in the medical field. Women and men should be given the same chances and should be treated the same in all careers. Gender differences in communication and the different tactics each gender uses proves that men and women are truly different. Why should women have to settle for less pay than men, why should men have to work longer than females, why does the gender of the doctor matter? All of those situations should not matter in any career. In the medical field women are having a hard time receiving the equality that they deserve. Discrimination against gender severely limits a woman’s advancement in their medical career which is greatly unfair. No matter what gender somebody is they should have a chance to prove that they are just as good as somebody of the other
