Mediopollito also know as a Half Chicken was born on a farm with only one of everything, including one leg, one eye, and one wing. Being seen different everyone treated him beyond special and therefore Medio Pollito grew up to be very vain and spoiled. One day he decided he was going to leave and explore the world and along the way to the governor’s palace, he comes across Water, Wind, and Fire that needs his help. Since Medio Pollito helps his new friends, they help save his life at the end of the tale to repay his for his nice acts of kindness.
This colonial retelling is retold by author Alma Flor Ada and is geared for younger age children from 3 to 9 years old and helps answer why there is a rooster on a weather vane that spins in the direction of the wind. The author also shows readers that random acts of kindness and good deeds will not go unnoticed that all readers can connect with even if you have obstacles in front of you. Ada includes an author’s note of when she heard this tale from her grandmother as a young child that became her favorite story growing up.
