Whenever I talk to my best friend, he usually says that “nurses are tools that are used by Doctors.” To him, he believes that I should plan to get my doctorate instead of remaining a nurse for life, because at the end of the day, nurses end up doing everything we can to help our patient in the healing process, while the doctors receives all the glory. My family really enjoy, and holds nurses to a high standard because, they have been a very important part of our family. My older sister has had all her children in the hospitals, and have had supportive nurses (just one bad experience, the rest has always been amazing). The physicians are what matters in the media, nurses are there to comply with what doctors say. There is little to no nurse advocacy for their patients, and all we do is take orders, answer phone calls or make appointment for our doctors. We’ve often been portrayed as sexual objects, who can get uncooperative patients to take their medication. I honestly don’t remember a TV show or move that portray male as nurses, other than the movie “Meet the Parent.” You can see in the movie where he is questioning and doubting his ability to be the “man of the house” since he is doing a female or woman’s job. His father in-law also constantly mentions or questions his career choice. We basically have no skill whatsoever, and all we are are the sympathetic, motherly, “doctor’s little helper”, just women doing what women are supposed to be doing. We can improve the image of nurses by getting our family and friends involved in health fairs, reach out to the local reporters who cover healthcare, provide education and training to the communities, and obviously raise awareness of nurses and what goes on in the really
