In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the main character Melinda Sordino is a victim of rape who is afraid to speak up about what happened. The first article from the Washington Post is about a message from “Emily Doe,” a pseudonym to protect the victim’s true identity, to her attacker Brock Turner after she was raped behind a dumpster. “Emily” and Melinda are in very similar situations. They were both raped while intoxicated, and after their attacks, felt worthless, isolated, and hesitant to accept what had happened to them. Since “Emily” found the courage to speak out against her attacker, perhaps this will inspire Melinda to speak out against her attacker, Andy Evans.
