Walk This Way is a documentary in which various diverse children share their stories related to acts of discrimination and intolerance in their lives. The children discuss how they were able to overcome the bias they were exposed to due to their circumstances, as well as their thoughts and feelings throughout this difficult time in their lives. The segment of one particular child in Walk This Way focuses on language and communication within a family and the effects that the child’s disability has on their family. It is this portion of the film that teachers most need to view in order to better avoid intolerance and bias within the boundaries of their classroom walls and to create and sustain a better learning atmosphere and environment for children of all ages everywhere. Melissa’s mother’s actions are inspirational in that she did whatever she possibly could in order to be able to always have a means of communication with her daughter. This aspect of Melissa’s segment has the potential to encourage teachers and educators everywhere to do whatever they possibly can in order to create and maintain clear communication with students. Transparency in communication between a teacher and their student is not limited to a situation as such, but is critical in all teacher-student relationships in order to optimize a student’s success. When a student struggles, it is a teacher’s responsibility to attempt to assist in the problem, but the student must also meet the teacher half way and put forth the effort to communicate coherently as well. A caring educator will find creative ways to communicate with learners when faced with an obstacle in doing so
