A Comparative Analysis of Two Ancient Statues-
The Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu and the Statue of Gudea
One of the manifestations of humanity’s need for self-expression was the re-creation of the human image. Accordingly, perhaps it was inevitable that sculpted forms would come into existence in this manner. Statues have been created and sculpted to pay homage to the greatest rulers and revered figures since ancient times up to the modern day. More importantly, statues have been used to represent numerous aspects of a society and serve as a reflection of specific cultures and also as historical reference points. This distinction grants intrinsic value to such objects and establishes the importance for their preservation and further study.

The statue depicts a man and woman of larger and smaller stature, respectively, standing side by side with Memi’s arm wrapped around Sabu’s shoulder and his hand resting on her left breast and Sabu’s arm wrapped around Memi’s waist to her right hand side. This intimate posturing clearly shows a romantic partnership existed between the two people and the inscription on the piece establishes their association with the royal family in ancient Egypt.

The second statue, as explained by The Metropolitan Museum of Art (2017), is made of Diorite, comes from Mesopotamia and is dated around 4000 years old. Additionally, there is a Sumerian inscription on the front of the statue that identifies it as Gudea, an ancient ruler of Mesopotamia.
