Strong memory depends on the overall mental health of your brain. Memory loss can happen at any age, but we become more upset by it as we get older. There are several things you can do to keep your brain healthy, research of age-related memory loss has resulted in new explanations and treatment techniques to improve memory, including diet, exercise, and stress management. It’s important to stay mentally active. Experts believe that a higher level of education can help your mental state at an old age. “Challenging your brain with mental exercise is believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them” (Robb-Nicholson). To keep your brain active, one should partake in different hobbies that he or she enjoys. This includes anything from joining a book club to running marathons every weekend. This brings us to another tip to keep our brains going. Along with staying mentally active, you should also stay physically active. Taking care of your body enhances your ability to recall information. Exercising allows chemicals in your brain to protect your blood cells. Studies have said that the parts of the brain that control thinking and have “greater volume” in people who exercise versus people who don’t (Godman).
Believe it or not your diet may also play a role in your memory loss. Those who eat breakfast have better overall nutrient consumption, as well as improved cognitive function and performance. This includes better memory and attention, than those who don't eat breakfast. Eating breakfast presents an opportunity to choose foods that help your memory. Carbohydrates are known as an energy source for your brain. Choosing to eat carbs may improve your memory due to the increase of glucose. Brain functioning improves after eating any food (Stern).
Stress management improves many aspects of your mental function. Research has proven that regular stress relief techniques such as meditation, massages, deep breathing, or prayer can not only improve memory loss but your overall health as well.
