The Menominee tribe is the only tribe that is formerly from Wisconsin, the Menominee tribe still lives in Wisconsin, and because of this, it has developed a lot of history around the state. Many of the names of towns and counties in Wisconsin originate from the Native American language Algonkian. Some Menominee tribe members call themselves Mamaceqlaw, which in Algonkian means "the people." The name Menominee derives from the Algonkian word Manomin which signifies wild rice, wild rice was a significant source of food for the tribe in its earliest days. The Menominee tribe lived in Green Bay when the French Explorer known as Jean Nicolet arrived in 1634; the French called the Menominee Folles Avoines or the "Wild oats People." Before the arrival of Nicolet and the French, the Menominee village positioned at the mouth of the Menominee River, and their initial settlement existed near present-day Marinette Wisconsin. After other tribes in the South heard about the encroachment of the Iroquois tribe in New York, they fled to Wisconsin. In the 1860s epidemics of smallpox, dysentery, and other diseases had become introduced to the Native Americans from Europeans; these infections killed hundreds of Menominee. Along with these problems, a white logging company recognized as "Pine Ring" had been granted permission to harvest dead trees from the Menominee Reservation. This agreement was okay until they started to cut down standing limber illegally.
