Mental Abuse Nature vs. Nurture is a question that scientists have been asking, and researching for a long time. Are we destined by our DNA, or do we learn to be who we are? This question is valid in the case of mental abuse. An emotionally abusive parent is passing on traits, and teaching traits. So, which will be the stronger influence, and can you change the end result? Mental Abuse has negative effects on a victim, it is a learned response, and can be prevented with proper intervention.
Mental abuse will have consequences in a person's life. Mental abuse is a form of control. The abuser uses fear, disapproval and humiliation. The abuse can be in the form of insults, name calling and even threats of violence. The abuse is constant and sends feelings of guilt. The

Studies have shown that the abusive behavior response is not truly inherited. A mental disturbance usually plays a part in the abusive behavior reaction. Mental illness like depression, bipolar personality, alcoholism, and severe anxiety, to name a few, can cause mental abusive responses. These illnesses can definitely be inherited, but the abusive behavior is a learned response.
Witnessing, or experiencing abusive behaviors can influence a person’s learning about relationships. Abusive responses can be learned in the home. The child witnesses emotional abuse between the two parents. Without intention, the child picks up the behavior. A person who emotionally abuses his/her spouse is more likely to mentally abuse his/her child. An emotionally abused child internalizes the response. Sometimes even blaming themselves for the problem. The individual accepts the abuse as normal behavior. The lack of another role model causes the individual to accept the behavior, and mimic it
