4) Reflect on your competencies; describe how you exemplify one mental health leader competency
I believe the mental health Leader competency that I exemplify is that of Personal Skills and Knowledge. In this category I believe I hit several of its components and try to practise them on an ongoing basis.
Under the Emotional Intelligence component, I have used this ability at my workplace on a daily basis. This is the ability to keep your emotions in check even when one of my individuals are having a bad day. Although you have empathy for them having a bad day, you don’t allow yourself to engage into power struggles, and you try to help the person to express what it is that is bothering them and then help them find solutions to their problem.

We do this by being honest, even though this may cause pain or may cause someone to get upset. But by being honest the individuals always know they are going to get truth from the staff member and they learn to be able to have trust in them. I have always tried to be open, honest and show genuine concern toward my individual and the issues that they feel strong about. Although they may not listen to what I have to say all the time they know that they can bring up any problem to me and they will receive my honest reply and help. I also try to follow the Agency code of conduct and ethics and treat everyone equally. Professionalism, I always believe I keep a poker face on at work and in my personal life with medical appointment. Although it would be easy to let emotions take you away and cause you to make irrational decisions, I find that sometimes you have to swallow hard and listen to all information given to you and then replied in a measure, thoughtful response. (even though you might want to scream inside.) . I have been working with people in the developmental services for the last 25 years and always said that this field has chosen me, no matter where I roam, I seem to fall back into the field. I always considered my position as a lifestyle choice instead of a job and look forward to going into work every day. In my work, much like the PSR principles, we try to help our individuals to become successful in living a meaningful and valued life regardless of their disabilities. We do this by helping our individuals to obtain meaningful work in the community, have them participate in community events , go on vacations and celebrate meaningful milestones like graduating from high school. Working in the Developmental service is stressful and has a high turnover of staff. I have been working in the field for extraordinary long period of time by the field standard, so believe this shows my
