Mercutio-The domino/effect
I chose the domino as a symbolic representation of the character Mercutio as he has a huge effect on the outcome of the tragedy. As well as being a jester, Mercutio acts as a turning point figure. His contribution to the play has the domino effect on the events that occur throughout thus the reasoning behind the domino symbolism. As long as Mercutio is present something vital or crucial to the plot will take place.

"If love be rough with you, be rough with love. Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down."-Mercutio to Romeo outside of the Capulet castle (I.4.27-28). Shakespeare has personified love so that actions such as “beating love”, “Prick love” and “be rough with love” are seemingly more doable. In conclusion Mercutio is telling Romeo to get over his headache for Rosaline and by doing this he convinces Romeo to go to the Capulet party where he will meet Juliet- a crucial turning point in the play.

Love as a theme is represented in many different perspectives throughout by various characters. The theme of Love is defined differently in opposing ways for the duration of the play; A classic romantic love theme is explored by Romeo and Juliet, A purely physical and sexual love is viewed by Mercutio and a more traditional approach to love is hence shown by Paris.

Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight, For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.-Romeo (1.5.51-60) This quote sparks an atmosphere of revelation for Romeo releasing what true love is. Romeo questions his love for Rosaline claiming that it was not real love and he was blind before this moment of what real love was. Romeo falls in love at first sight with Juliet-“Forswear it, sight For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night”, saying his eyes are liars because he has never seen someone so beautiful. Romeo has forgotten about Rosaline proving it was a mere case of ‘puppy
