“Romeo and Juliet” was absolutely dreadful, sad and hard to understand. Yet, there was one thing that William Shakespeare intrigued me with, the character Mercutio. I liked Mercutio the most, because he was relatable to my self. I liked that Mercutio was loyal, a jokester, and was unintimidated, these are all characteristics that I can see in myself.
Even though Mercutio was bold and a fighter he showed compassion for Romeo. Mercutio was a loyal friend to Romeo. This is shown in the text "Where the devil should this Romeo be, come he not home to-night." 2, 3. Mercutio was worried for Romeo’s safety, hearing that Romeo did not come home, Mercutio became very concerned. Mercutio told Romeo that he loved him. This in itself showed me that Mercutio was loyal and cared deeply for his friend.

Mercutio was comical, and because the play was so sad and he was the opposite, funny, it made me relate and connect to him. In the story Romeo and Juliet he makes jokes towards Romeo such as “Alas poor Romeo! he is already dead; stabbed with a white wench's black eye; shot through the ear with a love-song; the very pin of his heart cleft with the blind bow-boy's butt-shaft: and is he a man to encounter Tybalt? ” II, 4, 1171. In this quote it showed Mercutio making fun of Romeo by saying "shot through the ear with a love song". As you can see Mercutio was joking around with Romeo. Mercutio is funny, and this is the reason I enjoyed him. His humor is a place of connection, so when he dies, it is a huge let
