Bias In The News Assignment
Article 1:
Question 1) A brief summary or description of the article, caption, and/or photo.
Answer) The first article is “School Bans National Guard T-Shirts Over Gun Image” by Todd Stanes. In this article a recruiter for the New York Army National guard was on a school campus wearing a shirt on which a gun was pictured and he was distributing the same shirts to children but he was banned due to the violation of the school Code Of Conduct.
Question 2) Which method of biases does the article, caption, and/or photo portray and explain why?
Answer)
This article shows bias by headline because it portrays the wrong message; the person who was wearing the shirt was because he was supporting the National Guard. The school bands the shirt because it had an image of a soldier holding a gun which showed violence but if you were to imagine how an image of an National Guard would look like that’s how you would picture it and technically a soldier would also be holding a gun.
This article also shows bias through use of names and titles. This is done by using labels and title to describe people and place. The guard giving out the T-shirt was doing the right thing from his point of view but he did not realize that a soldier holding a gun is giving the message of violence and therefore not appropriate for school. But the school should also understand the fact that the gun is the traditional symbol of the natural guard and the kids wearing them were just supporting them and not portraying the message of violence.
Question 3) How would you change the article, caption, and/or photo in order to give the reader a neutral perspective?
Answer)
The bias by headline could be changed to “School Bans National Guard T-shirt Over Gun Image To Protect Children From Violence”. By changing the headline people won’t react negatively towards the newspaper and won’t find it bias.
The bias through use of names and titles could be fixed by mentioning the guard giving the shirts was not aware of the school and the codes they go by.
