aymond Sintes is Meursault’s neighbor. He claims to be a warehouse guard but in reality everyone identifies him as a pimp that lives off women. In his neighborhood, he is not very popular. Camus describes Raymond as “ very sharp” because of his fashionable edge. In “ The Stranger”, Raymond is recognized as abusive, especially towards his girlfriend who he claims is cheating on him. He is clearly a malevolent influence to Meursault specifically because Meursault does not care what is morally right or wrong.. In “ The Stranger”, it states “ But he often talks to me and sometimes stops by my place for a minute, because I listen to him. I find what he has to say interesting” ( Camus, 28).

In the narrative, Raymond violates his girlfriend multiple times. During his conversation with Meursault, he explains that he believes his girlfriend is cheating on him. Raymond established that he constantly helps to support her in money, love and compassion, and in return she cheats on him with another man. Raymond becomes furious and slaps her around senselessly. According to the passage, it states “ He’d beaten her till she bled. He’d never beaten her before. I’d smack her around a little” ( Camus, 31). He is never satisfied with peace and tranquility. One believes that Raymond behaves the way he does because there is a lot of built up tension inside of him that any nuisance and aggravation will cause an explosion of hostility. In comparison, Raymond and Okonkwo from “ Things Fall Apart” are very alike. They both believe that every man should respond to situations with anger.
