Mexican-American culture revolves around family and great traditions to honor family values. There are four different styles of parenting; “indulgent, authoritarian, authoritative, and uninvolved” (Darling, 1999, pg3). These different parenting styles impact the attachment style that a child will emerge. They are two different types of parenting styles which Mexican-American culture uses which are the authoritarian and authoritative. Depending on the parenting style the child has different social and behavioral outcomes. In Mexican-American culture, they are two important parenting styles which are authoritarian and authoritative which have different attachment outcomes from the children. These styles have different results with the Mexican-American children because of the consequences that are caused with parenting styles. In Mexican-American cultural, the most influential parenting style is the authoritarian parenting style (Scott, 2014, para9). The definition of authoritarian “authoritarian child‐rearing style is low in acceptance and involvement, high in coercive control, and low in autonomy granting” (Berk, 2014, pg279). This style is used the most in the Mexican-American homes since this creates the most respect towards the parents and elders. In this culture family and respect is the main analogy for this reason which this kind of style of parenting is often used. Furthermore, this parenting styles has some positive but mainly negative effects towards the children. My father was raised in authoritarian parenting style, but my mother was raised using authoritative parenting style. They both had different parenting when they were raised, but they used authoritative parenting style to raise my siblings and me. My mother says “my grandparents were demanding with my father with his respect towards them, his mechanic career, and his behavioral” (Guillen, 2016). This parenting did create respect towards other especially with his father, but he had a dislike towards the mother. Since his mother was the one that would do most of the parenting since his father would work full-time to pay the bills. This parenting style had a lot of dilemma towards my father’s emotional position and his respect towards his mother. My mom said, “that he had a drinking problem since he felt that he wasn’t good enough to meet their standards and that he felt bad that his mother had a cold shoulder towards him” (Guillen, 2016). This parenting style has many negative outcomes especially with the negative attachment of towards his mother. In another hand, my mother was raised by her grandmother who raised her using authoritative parenting style. My mom said, “that she felt that her grandmother raised to live in the real world, to respect others, and to had outstanding behavior” (Guillen, 2016).
