The Mexican-American War began in May 1847 and ended September 14th, 1848. It all started in 1830 when over 20,000 Americans had migrated into Texas, which was Mexico at the time. Four years later, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became dictator of Mexico. He then called for the expulsion of all Americans, because we began to Americanize the Texas Territory and we pushed for a more democratic government system. Another cause of the Mexican-American War was the Alamo which occurred in 1836 under the command of Lieutenant William B. Travis. This Mexican-American War was an example of Manifest Destiny, because it was our God-given right to take in lands from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans, including Texas, California, and Oregon.
In the election of 1844, Democrats nominated James K. Polk over Martin Van Buren or John C. Calhoun, and Polk also won the election against Henry Clay. President Polk favored annexation of Texas, taking all of Oregon Country from Brits, and taking California from Mexico. Also, Mexico had purified itself from its crimes and its guilt. After being informed of the effects of the war, it persuadee to change my perspective on the war. It left a positive impact on the United States, because Mexico seceded from the United States, and we got California and New Mexico for $15 million. Also, Wilmot Priviso made a proposal to ban slavery in any new territories the United States received from the Mexican-American War.
