The background essay says, “ Thousands of Mexicans and Americans died, and half of the country of Mexico was taken by the United States as a war prize”. During the Mexican- American war, many people from both countries died trying to claim the land that they believed was theirs. The U.S. took Mexico’s land as a prize of their own, they believed they needed that land because they wanted to fulfill their Manifest Destiny.The war started when the annexation of Texas to the United States started to happen. The ending turned out to be the United States winning because the U.S. ended up taking half of Mexico’s land. After the war was over and Mexico’s land was taken, Mexico became a lot smaller. The United States was unjustified to go to war with Mexico because they believed it was their manifest destiny and they didn’t have a strong enough reason to fight for what they believed was right.

One reason that explains my reasoning for my claim is that President Polk’s troops attacked the Mexicans troops at Rio Grande. For example, “ ( in early 1846, on Polk’s orders) the troops commanded by General Zachary Taylor arrived at the Rio Grande”( Document C). A quote that supports this claim is,” Slaveholders crossed the sabine ( Louisiana and Texas) with their slaves, in defiance of the Mexican ordinance of freedom” ( Document D). This quote explains that Americans brought their slaves into Mexico causing more and more of an increase of slavery in the country. Also, breaking Mexico’s rules and taking more of their land.
