The Mexican-American War is hardly discussed among the other American Wars. This war is important in American history for the land gained from it would sill belong to Mexico or Texas would have become its own country. However, the growth of the Manifest Destiny allowed settlers to expand further into the United States. The reason I have chosen this war was to discuss the Texas Revolt, the Alamo, and the land gained from Mexico.
The Manifest Destiny was a coined term, for the belief was America shall take over all North America. Although, the borders of America keep expanding further and further into Mexico territory the tension was becoming high. The Alamo was fought because the Texans and the Tejanos (Texas-Mexicans) wanted to become a republic but also free themselves from Sana Anna’s demanding rule. The myth was that only 187 Texans fought compared the massive army Mexico had so there were no survivors. However, many did escape such as Davy Crockett but were captured and executed. However, the slogan forever remains, “Remember the Alamo.” (322). Once Texas becomes independent they remain in this state for 10 years. Yet, one of the few outcomes was Taylor became a national war hero and a candidate of presidency in 1848. However, the Treaty of Hidalgo, “sold” New Mexico and California to the United States for $15 million. Yet, the United States also gained Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and some of Wyoming and Colorado. The new citizens gained in the new territories such as the Hispanics, would be considered seconded class citizens. Nevertheless, there are many controversies why the war began such as the Manifest Destiny and the Mexican slavery. The growth of America is outstanding and it becomes a massive force once the Louisiana Purchase was bought. The Spanish-American War began with the events like the Texas Revolt, the Alamo, and the aftermath like the land gained from Mexico. The War impacted America by gaining land but it also influenced the candidacy of the future president by using Texas as the main subject. The land mass also allowed settlers to expand even farther into the Manifest Destiny forever changing the face of America into the United States we know
