Being chosen as the host of the DRNC Convention even planned to run from 29th August to 3rd September is a great opportunity for Miami-Dade. Being a high-profile event, it will be of great economic value to the County as well as improve on its profile as a preferable host for such events. However, if our experience is anything to go by if not planned carefully, it could go south fast.
Over the last 40 years, Miami-Dade has hosted some of the mega international events among them the Super Bowls (1999, 2007, and 2011), Presidential Debates (2004), the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) Conference in 2003, and the Summit of the Americas in 1994. Activation and strengthening of Intelligence and Surveillance Unit – to be more proactive, we can set up an intelligence and surveillance unit that will be on the ground to figure out the views and opinions of the groups that are likely to oppose the conventions objective; what issues they want addressed and work out a plan where they can be addressed before the event. The team will report to us every two weeks and as a committee we will act accordingly. ii. Identification and implementation of new innovations – planning this early gives us adequate time to carefully analyze and polish any new ideas that we can use during the events. Incorporating recommendations from previous events – there are recommendations from committees and teams of past events on what to do to achieve better results. E.g. the FTAA recommendations. Improving old innovations with these recommendations and implementing new ones at the same time will give us a better winning chance.

Threats
i. Riots with large unruly crowds – large scale events such as the DRNC Convention have been proven to attract protests and therefore, there is a huge possibility that we will have to deal with unruly crowds. ii. Disturbances to the smooth running of event – disruption of the DRNC event is a threat because should the crowds get out of hand, it could even lead to the premature closing of event. iii. Terrorism- terrorism attacks are threats across the globe and the fact the DRNC is a high-profile event and will attract a huge number of people could also attract terrorists. iv. Negative media – media if not managed properly could do more harm than good because as they give information, they have no control to whom it gets to and they also tend to blow things out of proportion.

Recommendations
1. Adequately equip the various departments of the Miami-Dade Police Departments especially the intelligence and surveillance unit and the information resource and risk
