“Michael Barry, you are hereby charged with the murder of twenty-nine year old Emily May Johnson.” The judge’s deep, baritone voice chilled me right to my bones. My eyes flitted around the crowded room like a scared bird. My heartbeat quickened as the judge gestured to my lawyer.
Oh Emily, my beautiful, innocent Emily. I had never meant to hurt you. My lawyer stood up as he addressed the judge, who looked down on us from his podium.
“Today my client will be pleading innocent. Michael was not a part of this despicable murder.” He sat down quickly, as if he wasn’t sure how the many people in the courtroom would act. Sure enough, there was a collective wave of gasps and whispers from behind me. I did all I could not to sink down into my seat.
