In his series of books titled “Michael Vey,” Richard Paul Evans tells the story of a group of teenagers, some with mysterious electrical powers, and some not, on a mission to take down an evil corporation that seeks to take over the world and repopulate it with an entirely “electric” species of superhumans. On this treacherous quest, Michael Vey is shown to have a massive internal struggle. He is torn between risking his life, and the lives of his friends, to save the world, or cowering, and prolonging the lives of the people he cares about. The machine emitted a kind of radiation that killed all but seventeen babies born in the span of three days. however, the survivors each had a unique electrical ability. This machine was created by the Elgen. The Elgen realized the effects that the MEI had and immediately shut it down. To keep people from finding out, and to suppress the inevitable billion-dollar lawsuits, they covered up all the evidence and began to abduct the survivors. They discovered the existence of their special abilities and set to work to recreate them. Michael and Taylor were the last two to be captured and it was only because they tripped one of the Elgen’s traps set up to find anyone trying to figure out what the MEI did. The more tractable of the electric children were already corrupted and turned evil by Dr. C. J. Hatch, the CEO of the company. In Michael’s escape, he was able to liberate a few of the others who joined them in their quest to destroy the Elgen.
