Most people can confirm that phones have a significant impact on their lives. Many believe that they rely too much on their phones and they negatively impact their lives. In Michaela Cullington’s essay, “Does Texting Effect Writing”, and Jenna Wortham’s essay, “I Had a Nice time with You On the App”, they explain how texting effects everyday life. In Cullington’s essay, she argues that texting has a minimal effect one writing. She shares her own personal experiences and does an extensive amount of research to prove her claim. Her essay reaches out to teachers, parents and students and explains to them how texting has a small effect on their writing abilities. In Wortham’s essay, she argues that even though using apps to communicate it isn’t face to face communication, communication though these apps work the same way and can also help make a relationship stronger. Cullington’s use of pathos was used appropriately for the subject being discussed. Though there wasn’t much pathos used, she still managed to connect with her audience: “I myself am a frequent texer. I chat with my friends from home [and school], perhaps to discuss what time we are going to eat dinner or to ask a question about homework” (Cullington 799). This experience allows her audience to connect with her and to think back onto a similar experience that they have had. Unlike Cullington, Wortham’s use of pathos was used all though out her writing. She makes the audience sympathize for her when she talks about her hardships: “The downside struggle can be hard to juggle ways to communicate” (Wrotham 824). She also makes the audience sympathize for her when she states that she and her boyfriend were “living more that 3,000 miles apart” (Wrotham 823).
