The song, “Gimme Shelter” was written by The Rolling Stones band member Mick Jagger. Mick Jagger wrote the song during the same time period of the Vietnam War. The main purpose of the song was to bring awareness to the Vietnam War. Many countries, including the United States, were not wanting to get involved in the war and Mick Jagger wanted to encourage countries to join the war in Vietnam. Mick Jagger used his lyrics to demonstrate the conditions and the effects on people of the Vietnam War. This “war” is interpreted in two ways. The first, very literal interpretation, is the “war” is the actual physical fighting in the Vietnam War. The other belief is that “war” is a struggle for support. The struggle for other countries support is caused by the lack of awareness of the conditions people are living in in Vietnam. The second part of the quote, “children” shows the extent of the war’s effect. Serious matters such as war are only told to children if will affect them personally or if it is developing into a larger problem. Also, there is another interpretation of this song that is saying that children at taking over the adults jobs. This sounds very much like child soldiers where they are forced to serve in the army. The word “children” near the word “war” makes the two words become relatable. Furthermore, the phrase, “War, children.” is very similar to the idea of child soldiers because children are deeply involved in the fighting, unfortunately. I think that the song is very similar to the movie Hotel Rwanda. In the movie many countries don’t want to send help to retrieve the people staying the hotel. This song shows that countries are reluctant to send help or assistance to the people of Vietnam because they are already aware of the previous fighting.
