Petrach was an Italian Scholar in the 1300s. He used the term "dark" and "light" during the middle ages. Ancient Greeks and Romans were in the "light". And the people in Europe from 500-1500 AD were in the "dark". Although the middle ages were considered "dark" due to the Crusades and the Black Death, the middle ages could also be considered the "growth age".
