The middle ages were a very filled time period with a lot going on. There were, however, several things that kept the middle ages consistent and “in check” if you will. Among these things there were three main ideas that appeared to be present throughout the centuries. These ideas were “you give and you get”, “work hard and everyone lives”, and “in Church we trust.” Each of these main ideas have a few connections to the SPICE themes and facts to go along with them. The main ideas were derived from three documents examined from the middle ages. These documents were incredibly useful because of their facts given in different manors.
The first main idea, “you give and you get”, mostly relates to the first document. This idea is connected to the political, economic, and social aspects of the SPICE themes. In the middle ages,

When relating this idea to the themes of SPICE, it is focused mostly on Cultural, because it has to do with religion and belief systems, and Political. In a way, it can be determined that the Church was more of a government that an actual church. It states in Document 3, “Every person was required to live by the Church laws and pay heavy taxes to support the Church.” There was a code to follow seeming to represent laws in a way, which can be found in document 5, known as the Code of Chivalry. Along with this, people gave taxes to the Church as well as riches to be “shown the way to everlasting life and happiness.” or to get special favors of a to be certain of a place in heaven. Because so many people trusted in what the Church was doing, they obeyed it and from that the Church became rich and powerful. From this, “it often used this power to influence kings to do as it wanted” (document 3). I wonder if they sang hymns in church or just did their tax
