Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was born on May 8, 1753 in Corralejo near Guanajuato, Mexico. He died on July 30, 1811 in Chihuahua, Mexico. He was the second of eleven children by Cristobal Hidalgo and his wife. Hidalgo attended the Jesuit Secondary school, received a bachelor's degree in theology, and philosophy in 1773 from the San Nicolas College. His father was the Hacienda administrator, the Hacienda in which Hidalgo was born, and grew up on. He learned French in school, which influenced him to become a Catholic priest in 1778. In 1803, his elder brother died, that is when he took over and became the priest of Dolores, Guanajuato. There, he promoted economic activities such as; pottery factory, carpentry workshops, harness making, weaving, and brickmaking. He planted mulberry trees, vineyards, and olive groves. In 1808, Spain was invaded by french troops, Napoleon the first wanted to give the throne to the emperor’s brother, Joseph Bonaparte.
