Many people feel guilt from time to time. However, only some people can work past that feeling, while others hold onto it. In this novel by Trent Reedy, the author expresses different ways that his characters dealt with guilt. Mike Wilson lives with his mother and sister in a trailer that is falling apart. This scene shows how Mike’s guilt finally forced him to confess his big secret of not obeying his mother’s wishes. Mike went through the whole season with a guilty feeling in his stomach. At every game Mike would look up in the crowds, anticipating to see his mother sitting there. The only problem is Allison Wilson does not know about her son’s football career because in the beginning of the season Mike forged her signature so he could play. Eventually, Mike could not handle the guilt and confesses to his mother. The author uses dialogue to express not only how guilty he is, but how disappointed his mother is.“I’m your mother! I did not even know you were on the team… Boy, what an idiot I’ve been!” (Reedy 242). The author’s choice of words used in the dialogue lets readers know how angry and upset she really is. When he needed a friend to talk to in the library, Isma was there for him. While this is a good point, it fails to account for when Mike was walking alone on the bridge. He felt that no one was his friend because Isma and him were in an argument. One of his teammates had also tried to punch him over a position in football. In the middle of the game, Nick Rhodes can get a temper and he starts to mess up causing Coach Carter to replace him with Michael. “Wilson, you’re in at tight end [Rhodes position] until I tell you otherwise. Keep up the great work out there. Rhodes glared at me.”(Reedy 140). Rhodes got even angrier at being replaced and he wanted to create a fight with Mike, not be friends.
