Effects of Being in the Public Eye
Miley Cyrus was the first teen artist to have two number-one albums in the same year and her concert film, Best of Both Worlds, became the highest grossing Super Bowl weekend DVD release (“Miley Cyrus” Contemporary Musicians). With these huge accomplishments in mind, Miley Cyrus was undoubtedly one of the most influential people of this generation. Destiny Hope Cyrus, better known as Miley Cyrus, was the main character in the hit TV show, Hannah Montana, until 2010. After that, her music career took off, she was making successful albums and still acting in movies like The Last Song. Cyrus was the main character in the hit TV show “Hannah Montana”. While in this show, she expressed her ability to sing and act. In 2010 when Cyrus decided to not continue with the show, she merged away from the sweetheart teen who she was made out to be (Hannah Montana (TV, 2006). Miley Cyrus walked away from the Hannah shaped spotlight everyone knew and loved. Cyrus was not trying to hurt the fans by this decision, she wanted to be her own person, not the one on everyone’s TV. Her first step to becoming her own person was a more adult role in the movie called “The Last Song” (Hannah Montana (TV, 2006). This was a role as a troubled teen with issues with her father, which Cyrus portrayed beautifully. She still attempted to prove her maturity to others. “However, a photo taken by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz of Cyrus exposing her bare back while holding a blanket to her chest provoked complaints from critics who felt the magazine was overtly sexualizing a minor. Cyrus disagreed. "I think it's really artsy," she told Vanity Fair” (“Miley Cyrus” Contemporary Musicians). Parents who were used to buying Hannah Montana posters were now looking at a video of Cyrus dancing nude on a wrecking ball. Critics snapped back with terrible reviews of her latest work leaving Cyrus hurt (“Miley Cyrus” Gale Biography). She did not give up and continued to do whatever she could to become an adult. In 2014 she was on the list for TIME magazine’s Most Influential People (“Miley Cyrus” Contemporary Musicians). All of the dramatic events that she had participated in helped her gain thousands of eyes on her. The exposure might have been for the wrong reasons but it definitely has a good explanation. Miley Cyrus was trapped in her former Disney self which is hard to deal with. The public’s backlash on Cyrus was and still is very heated, but why? Should we really punish someone for trying to move on with their life? Society has an image of a perfect young woman in mind and when that is even slightly off, they give their input on how that woman should change. Miley Cyrus has gone through terrible review from critics and fans but how she chooses to move forward is what will define her
