It is important that social workers become knowledgeable about their clients’ cultures and are culturally sensitive. As for me, that’s why I’m taking this course because I have a particular interest in serving those who fought and served us. In order for me to build cultural sensitivity around military culture I must have an understanding and awareness to help me translate their skills, and experience. Furthermore, through the web training and assigned readings, the three areas that influenced my learning experience were understating military values, military rank/rate, and translating military jargon. I believe these areas have expanded my learning capacity to understand military culture from when I first started, which will help me tremendously in the field of military social work. For many U.S. civilians there is an emphasis on the individual or on individual achievements, which differs from military values. Military culture provides a clear understanding that individual achievement is important, but to the degree that it supports the mission through loyalty, obedience, and honor. For that, I respect military personnel because they work until the task is done; their work is not viewed as a “9-to-5 job.” …show more content…
I understand that I can’t have all these acronyms memorized in one night, but the idea that there are military abbreviations that exist is important for me. It’s important for me as a social worker in a military setting because it goes back to this notion of having awareness to ultimately build trust and acceptance with a military client. This is a key factor for me and anything I can do to achieve that will always be a priority for me.
