Dr. Powell February 1, 2013 Mismanagement at the Alamo On November 30, 2012 the New York Times published an article titled “In Texas, Another Skirmish Brews at the Alamo.” What it reported was that the Alamo was being mismanaged and neglected by the organization that has been it caretakers for over 100 years. This organization is the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, a woman’s group in which all members are descendants of Texas’ pioneers. In 2007 the groups budgeted there preservation plan for the Alamo at about $10 million to expand their library that is located at the Alamo site but only $1.6 million to the actual preservation of the historic building. Over the years 2006-2009 fiscal records show that only $350 was spent on preservation related projects each year. Once the nonprofit group was under investigation for mismanagement they found that the Daughter had failed to make the historic preservation of the Alamo a priority, they failed to maintain the property, also they misused state money for their own benefit (their library), and then hid their financial distress from Texas Legislature. In response Texas lawmakers voted to transfer custody of the Alamo to the state’s General Land Office. So the Daughters of the Republic of Texas would still care for the building but under a state contract. And since then most mismanagement issues have been corrected and a $600,000 renovation program has been made for the Alamo. This article of
