The main theme I picked out of the book Ishmael and the movie Miss Representation was the idea of conformity. Both the book and the movie have scenarios where they talk about how being accepted is a such a significant part of today’s society. So I’m going to be comparing and contrasting the general idea of conformity in the text from Ishmael and the movie Miss Representation. Ishmael is about a gorilla who gives insight about today’s society to a the narrator. Where Miss Representation talks about women and how they try to fit in with today’s society.

Then the man decided he wanted to try and educate the gorilla and try to communicate with Ishmael telepathically. Sokolow bought Ishmael books so he could educate himself even more. He chose to educate himself first on the subject of captivity but then later got into the exploration of humanity. The narrator then began having meetings with Ishmael to try understand his cultural history. Ishmael then talked about human culture. He put the human race into two groups takers and leavers. Takers are the group that live through technology and in simplest terms only try to destroy the world. One thing that Ishmael said in the text was “ Takers are doing their best to destroy that, along with everything else.” This brings up the theme of conformity once again. Meaning our society is taking advantage of world with technological advances but are also destroying the world at the same time. Another thing that stood out when I was reading this was when Ishmael said “ Takers have all sorts of useful information in our universe, but nothing pertains to how people should live.” This to me shows that we as people just socially accept that we are destroying our world. Leavers are a different culture, they in the book are described as more tribal and cultural who use the and respect the land they are on. Towards the end of the book Ishmael said “Taker story is the world belongs to
