There was quite a bit of tension between the North and South over the request of Missouri of wanting to become a slave state. This threatened the balance between slave and free states. The reason why was because it disrupted the balance since there was an even amount of free and slave states. As well as, it would create a precedent where congressional consensus to reluctant increase of slavery. So, to help get rid of the tension between the states, Congress created a compromise, which was known as the Missouri Compromise. In the compromise it pretty much granted Missouri's request on becoming a slave state, but also created an imaginary line through the Louisiana territory. Though I believe it would’ve worked if they didn’t add the second part of the compromise which was to forbid slavery from the Louisiana territory to the north latitude 36°30’. The reason is there were two different groups of people who had conflicted views on slavery. The slaves were the ones who wanted to maintain their power and freedom to have slaves. To be able to maintain their power they used enough votes from Congress to be able to demand one compromise after another and able to control the majority of the legislation. The South was able to use this power to repeal the compromise and reintroduced slavery into the area. However, during the time, the North was becoming increasingly anti-slavery, but after the repeal of the compromise they saw it as a betrayal. As well as, the majority of the anti-slavery Northerners believed in at least ending the expansion of slavery though few favored immediate abolition. Additionally, I believe it was necessary to have the Missouri Compromise because it ended up leading to the creation of the Kansas-Nebraska act which caused people who were anti-slavery to become outraged. Even though both acts were allowed because it allowed slavery to a certain extent, but it did elicit the North to take action.
